How to Choose a Solar Installer

A solar system is only as good as the person who installs it. Panels and inverters are largely the same from one supplier to the next, but wiring, protection and paperwork vary enormously. Work through these checks before you accept a quote.

1. Confirm who signs the Certificate of Compliance

Any solar system connected to your home's electrical installation must be covered by an electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC), issued by a registered electrical contractor and done to SANS 10142-1. Ask for the name and registration of the electrician who will sign it, and make sure the CoC is included in the quoted price. Read more in our guide to SANS 10142 and solar safety standards.

2. Ask whether they are a PV GreenCard installer

PV GreenCard is a voluntary quality programme run by the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA). It is not a legal requirement, but installers in the programme work to an industry checklist and hand over a certificate for each installation.

3. If you stay connected to the grid, check the approvals

Grid-tied and hybrid systems generally need small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) approval from your municipality, or from Eskom if Eskom supplies you directly, and the inverter usually has to be on the approved list. A good installer handles or guides this process. See how to register your solar system.

4. Insist on an itemised quote

A quote that only says "5kW hybrid system" is impossible to compare. A proper quote lists:

  • Brand and exact model of the panels, inverter and battery
  • The mounting system for your roof type
  • Cabling, DC isolators, surge protection and earthing
  • Labour, the CoC and any approval fees
  • Product warranties and the installer's own workmanship warranty

Our guide on how to spot a dodgy solar quote walks through a real example line by line.

5. Understand the warranties

Product warranties come from the manufacturer and depend on the equipment being bought through an official distributor. The workmanship warranty comes from the installer and covers their wiring and mounting. Ask how long it lasts and who you call if something fails.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Who will sign the Certificate of Compliance, and is it included in the price?
  • Will you visit the site and check the roof and distribution board before quoting?
  • Which brands and models are you quoting, and why those?
  • How long is your workmanship warranty, and what does it cover?
  • Will you handle the SSEG application if I stay grid-connected?
  • Can I speak to two recent customers?

Red flags

  • A firm price without a site visit
  • Pressure to pay the full amount upfront
  • No named electrician for the CoC
  • A quote with no brands or model numbers
  • No written workmanship warranty
  • Prices far below every other quote you received

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a reputable solar installer in South Africa?

Choose an installer who will have the electrical work signed off with a Certificate of Compliance by a registered electrical contractor, visits your property before quoting, gives you an itemised quote with brands and models, and offers a written workmanship warranty. Being a PV GreenCard installer is a useful extra quality signal. Get at least three quotes and compare them line by line.

Do I need a Certificate of Compliance for a solar installation?

Yes. A solar system connected to your home's electrical installation must be covered by an electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC), issued by a registered electrical contractor and done to SANS 10142-1. Insurers can ask for it after a claim, and you need a valid electrical CoC when you sell the property.

What is a PV GreenCard installer?

PV GreenCard is a voluntary quality programme run by the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA). Installers in the programme are trained to an industry standard and complete a quality checklist for each installation. It is not a legal requirement, but it shows the installer has committed to recognised workmanship standards.

Do I need permission from my municipality to install solar panels?

If your system is connected to the grid (grid-tied or hybrid), you generally need to apply to your municipality, or Eskom if Eskom supplies you directly, as a small-scale embedded generator (SSEG) before connecting, and the inverter usually has to be on the approved list. Rules differ between municipalities. A fully off-grid system does not need SSEG approval, but it still needs a CoC.

Can I install solar panels myself?

You can do much of the physical work, such as mounting panels, but connecting the system to your home's electrical installation and issuing the Certificate of Compliance must be done by a registered electrical contractor.

How do I get my solar business listed in this directory?

Listing is free. Submit your company details on the List Your Business page. Every listing is reviewed by hand before it goes live, and we ask for a link back to SolarPowerGuide from your website.
